Humans of HighCamp

Tyler Hinytzke is a Consultant at HighCamp and joined the firm in October 2021.

Tell us about your journey from Intern to Consultant at HighCamp.

I was enrolled in a graduate program in investment management at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee when one of HighCamp’s co-founders, who happened to be local, reached out to my instructor about an internship opportunity. Seeking a career in or adjacent to high finance, I applied despite having no prior exposure to private fund compliance.

At the time, the firm was small, so I interviewed with the entire HighCamp team. From those first conversations, I immediately felt it would be a great place to start my career. The positive and collaborative culture stood out throughout the interview process, and after accepting the internship in October 2021, I knew I had made the right choice.

From the start, I worked directly with clients and shadowed two of HighCamp’s Partners during a client engagement in my first few weeks. Through ongoing hands-on client work, close mentorship, and the firm’s internal training program, I quickly built a strong foundation in the Advisers Act and private fund regulations.

After graduating in May 2022, I accepted a full-time Associate position. Since then, I have taken on increasingly complex regulatory matters, broadened my regulatory expertise, and gained valuable perspective by observing senior team members navigate unique client situations. In March 2024, I was promoted to Consultant and have become the primary contact for several clients, which has been very rewarding.

What are your favorite aspects of working with clients?

My favorite part of working with HighCamp’s clients is supporting firms that fund frontier ideas and build the companies of tomorrow. I value knowing that we play a small role in helping that ecosystem grow.

I also enjoy the constant learning. With clients spanning venture capital, real estate, private equity, and hedge funds, each with distinct strategies and investment criteria, the work remains dynamic and intellectually engaging.

What I value most, however, is HighCamp’s relationship-driven approach. We take the time to understand each client’s day-to-day operations, which fosters strong communication and allows me to build genuine, long-term relationships with the people behind the firms. Getting to know our clients on a personal level not only makes the work more enjoyable, but also makes the results more meaningful, especially when I can help solve a problem that truly matters to them.

What do you enjoy most about HighCamp beyond client work?

Another aspect of HighCamp that I appreciate is being part of a small, close-knit team. Our size allows everyone to contribute beyond client engagements and take ownership of internal initiatives. From the start of my internship, it was clear that if I had a particular interest or strength, there was space to pursue it.

I have a strong interest in tracking SEC enforcement actions, notable regulatory developments, and broader industry trends. I now lead the firm’s weekly regulatory update, which has been instrumental in my professional development. This interest also led me to spearhead the creation of HighCamp’s quarterly newsletters and periodic client alerts.

What’s Unique About HighCamp’s Culture and Employee Benefits?

One thing that truly sets HighCamp apart is how much the leadership prioritizes culture and cares for employees at every level. A great example of this is the “Me” Stipend, a benefit introduced for employees after three years with the firm. Designed for personal enrichment, it encourages team members to step outside their comfort zones and invest in themselves.

When a friend invited me on a multi-week trip to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and go on safari, I initially declined. The time away from work and the idea of camping on a mountain for a week felt overwhelming and far outside my comfort zone. After I casually mentioned it to the HighCamp Partners, they encouraged me to use my “Me” Stipend for the trip. With their support, I decided to go, committing just a month before departure.

The experience was unlike anything I had done before. I wasn’t an outdoors person and had barely camped, yet the hike required sleeping in tents for five straight nights. Summit night was the most challenging. We began our final ascent at midnight, climbing from 15,000 to more than 19,300 feet. Between the altitude, exhaustion, and darkness, it was one of the most physically demanding experiences of my life. Reaching the peak was exhilarating and remains one of the most rewarding moments I’ve ever had.
